Leon Pericles was raised in the outback town of Meekatharra. His art studies culminated in postgraduate studies in the UK. From an early age he won awards, quickly establishing skills and interests in a diversity of mediums such as painting, printmaking, sculpture, design and kite making. His great love of the Australian outback shows clearly in his work and his imaginary town of Widjimorphup features prominently.

The most notable feature of his body of work is the diversity and multiplicity of topic and style. Pericles has an extraordinary curiosity for so many subjects and a capacity to observe society and its foibles. In all his work, whilst there is considerable attention to accuracy of fact, he includes a delicious dose of fantasy and absurdity, inviting the viewer to examine more closely to establish where that line is drawn. The vehicle for this expression is often through his imaginary town of Widjimorphup.

In 1989 the Art Gallery of WA curated a retrospective exhibition of his prints entitled "20 years of Printmaking". Major commissions include a painting and construction work for the foyer of The Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, and a spectacular stained glass window for the Chapel of the Presbyterian Ladies' College, Perth. Leon is acclaimed nationally and internationally and has held many solo exhibitions throughout Australia and overseas since 1969.
